Herons by the River Near Midnight

Book cover design & interior layout

Herons By The River Near Midnight by Larry Lee Palmer is a selection of poems, short stories, Zen Buddhist meditations, and newspaper horse-racing columns collected over a half century, filled with spectacular pratfalls and moments of simple grace. Larry Lee Palmer was a turf writer for the Seattle Post Intelligencer. He won the Mark Kaufman Media Award for excellence in writing and reporting in 2002 and was voted the best sportswriter in the Pacific Northwest by the Seattle Weekly in 2008.

Chica Creative was responsible for the design and illustration of the book from the artwork on the front cover, to typography system, the structure and layout of the interior pages and select editing of the prose and poetry.

“Inspired by the ancient art form of woodcutting, the cover illustration plays with light and dark tones for a high-contrast, ethereal effect that captures the emotion of the poem for which the book is named.”

– Maria Mandle

Pattern developed for the endpaper (interior inside cover) of the book.

“I can’t think of another poet with greater accomplishments or more promise. He does not read a poem. He creates and delivers a finely sculpted piece of imagery. His body and soul merge with his voice and the words and a special aura appears, a presence, independent and distinct. I have never seen him deliver a poem that I was able to forget.”
